ECO MARATHON ATTEMPT

Shetland is playing a vital role in an attempt to break the world endurance record for distance travelled by a car on the equivalent of one gallon of fuel.

The record is Currently held by Microjoule from France which stands at 10705 miles to the gallon.

A new very high performance car is required for this years record-breaking attempt.

To stand a chance of taking the record the car has be as light as possible. It is hoped that the total weight of this car will be under 35 kg. To put this into perspective it will be lighter than the front seats of an average family car.

Scott Nicolson(Shetland Composites) and Hugo Spowers designed the car in Shetland earlier this year. The composite carbon fibre technology structure has been constructed by Shetland Composites. Scott Nicolson transfered the basic concept to wire frame drawings using a CAD package and from the CAD drawings built the plug & mould. The construction used a vacume resin transfere process and the shell created weights in at 6kg.

GH2OsT BUILD

Sullom Voe Oil Terminal, Shetland Island Council Ports and Harbours Operations and Shetland Towage are generously supporting the Shetland Composites project costs. Other project sponsors include BOC, Sigen and Scottish Enterprise. Other Shetland companies are also involved in the project, Shetland Transport The Art machine and Stronachs spray shop. The fuel cell technology is from Sigen, currently involved with the PURE hydrogen project in Unst, and BOC.
